Darryl Hodgkinson has suffered broken ribs and a suspected punctured lung after being flung across the galley of his Sydney to Hobart yacht Victoire in rough conditions.

The owner-skipper's injuries forced the boat to withdraw from the race on Sunday, but details of the retirement weren't provided until Hodgkinson made it to hospital back in Sydney on Monday.

The boat was one of 32 withdrawals from the 108-strong starting fleet, most of which cited damage.
