Body at tourist spot prompts murder probe

A murder investigation is underway after a man's body was found at a popular lookout in NSW's Illawarra region.

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man's body was found at a popular tourist spot in NSW's Illawarra region.

A member of the public discovered the corpse at Jamberoo Mountain Lookout in the 7000-hectare Budderoo National Park, west of Kiama on Sunday morning.

It remains unclear how the man, aged in his 40s, died but police are treating the death as suspicious.

State Emergency Service volunteers spent several hours searching dense bushland where the body was found looking for clues.

Police say the man has not been formally identified and an autopsy will examine the cause of death.
