Aerospace company Boeing has named one of its top officials, Maureen Dougherty, as the new president of Boeing Australia and the South Pacific.

Ms Dougherty will succeed Ian Thomas who took up the job in 2009 and now goes to Beijing as president of Boeing China.

President of Boeing International Shep Hill said Australia, where the company employs 3400 people, was one of Boeing's key markets and home to its largest operational footprint outside the United States.

"Maureen's appointment continues our enduring partnership with Australia. She knows Australia well from her time leading the Wedgetail airborne early warning and control program, now in service with the Royal Australian Air Force," he said in a statement.

Ms Dougherty, who holds a master's degree in engineering, has been involved in a number of Boeing's major programs including the KC-46A tanker program for the US Air Force, Wedgetail and the F-22 Raptor fighter program.
