Andrew Bogut has been snubbed for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Bogut's Golden State Warriors defensive partner, Draymond Green, also failed to claim the coveted prize, with American sports reporters naming the San Antonio Spurs' Kawhi Leonard the winner.

Bogut wasn't included in the top five candidates.

This is despite anchoring the Warriors' fearsome defence and leading the team to the best record in the NBA.

The Australian centre did not receive one first place vote from the more than 120 reporters involved.

Under the rules, reporters can vote for three players.

Their first place selection receives five points, second three points and third one point.

Bogut finished sixth with no first place votes, six second place and 13 third place.

Bogut has talked up Green during the season as a worthy defensive award winner and while the Warriors' aggressive power forward had the most first place votes, 45, Leonard, with 37 first place, had a larger point total with more second and third votes.

Leonard had 333 points, Green came in second with 317, third was Los Angeles Clippers centre DeAndre Jordan (261), then New Orleans Pelican Anthony Davis (107) and in fifth Dante Exum's Utah Jazz big man Rudy Gobert (33).

Bogut had 31 points, just ahead of Memphis' Tony Allen (29).

The 201cm tall small forward Leonard, who won the NBA Finals MVP award last year when the Spurs claimed the championship, is the shortest player to win the award since Ron Artest in 2003-04.

One of the knocks on Bogut was he missed games through injury in 2014-15, but Leonard played just 64 games compared to the Australian's 67.
