Australian centre Andrew Bogut has dominated on the defensive end as Golden State downed San Antonio 112-101 to claim the top seed in the NBA's Western Conference.
The win leaves the Warriors three games shy of attaining history as they try and surpass the Michael Jordan-led 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, who set the regular-season benchmark at 72-10.
Whether they chase that mark or not will come down to a team meeting on Friday, with coach Steve Kerr not keen to risk his stars ahead of the playoffs.
"We're going to talk about it tomorrow; we have been putting it off for as long as we were able to, which was until we got the No.1 seed," Kerr said.
"I'm inclined to give the guys the rest that they need but there is also a pact with the guys if they're not tired or banged up and they want to go for this they can."
In the first-ever match between two teams with at least 65 regular season wins, Stephen Curry top-scored for the Warriors with 27 points and Harrison Barnes had 21.
Bogut also had an excellent all-round outing on Thursday night, pulling down 11 rebounds and making two thunderous blocks to go with six points and three assists in 22 minutes.
He made his 400th blocked shot for the franchise when he rejected San Antonio forward LaMarcus Aldridge during the first quarter.
Bogut received a standing ovation from the crowd when he went to the bench in the third, having just thrown down a huge alley-oop dunk off a pass from Curry.
The big Australian was indifferent on the chase for history.
"It's important for a lot of guys, it's history but I am not too fussed either way," he said.
"I'd like to get it and it'd be good if we get it, but if not, it's not the end of the world."
Australian Patty Mills had seven points for the Spurs on a night where Manu Ginobili was the only San Antonio guard to shoot over 50 per cent.
The Warriors improved their league-best win-loss record to 70-9, wrapping up home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix and Minnesota also enjoyed wins on Thursday.
