Victoria quick Scott Boland admits the disappointment of being dropped from the one-day cup winning side helped light the fire in his belly before the Sheffield Shield season.

Boland has responded in fine fashion, building his case for a national call-up with 30 wickets at an average of 16.60 to be the competition's leading wicket taker after five rounds.

"It was disappointing but I can only keep taking wickets ... I've got to put that behind me and just keep doing really well with the red ball," Boland said.

"I didn't have a good one-day tournament but I feel like the ball is coming out really well now.

"... I think I had a bit of a change of mindset where I felt like, not that I had a point to prove, but I know that I've got the skills to get back into that one-day side.

"I know I've got the skills to do really well in white-ball cricket.

"Hopefully once the Big Bash comes around again I can show off those skills."

The last of Boland's 14 ODI appearances was against South Africa in Cape Town in October 2016.

With an ODI series against India after the four Tests, he's intent on thrusting his name in front of national selectors.

"It's the same for all the bowlers around the country, whoever is performing well at the right time (could get a call)," Boland said.

"... I'm not 30 yet so I'm still quite young.

"Any game you play for Australia is obviously a big bonus."

Top-of-the-table Victoria will look to bounce back from their first loss of the Shield season when they host Western Australia at the MCG starting on Friday.
