Richmond will attempt to play a more attacking brand of football as they look to address the slow starts that have plagued their past three AFL campaigns.
The Tigers slipped to a disastrous 1-6 record after seven rounds last year and their season never recovered, Damien Hardwick's side eventually finished 13th with eight wins.
Richmond forward Sam Lloyd said this year's pre-season competition has taken on extra significance for the Tigers as they look to bed down the bolder approach they've practised over the summer.
"If you saw the (intra-club) game that was quite an offensive, high-scoring game so if that's any indication then we're moving in the right direction," Lloyd said of Thursday's hitout at Punt Road.
"There's just a lot of confidence getting about the place and hopefully this (pre-season) series will give us even more confidence.
"If we can play well and maybe sneak a few wins in there then I think we'll be going in the right direction."
Lloyd is looking to build on a breakout season that saw him play all 22 games and kick 35 goals, second to leading goal-kicker Jack Riewoldt.
The 26-year-old was responsible for one of the highlights of a season to forget for the Tigers when he kicked a match-winning goal after the siren to down Sydney in round eight, snapping a six-game losing streak.
"That was certainly a high point (but) I wouldn't like to do that again necessarily," Lloyd said, smiling.
"If we could win by more comfortable margins I'd be happier with that.
"It's just about getting out there and playing consistent footy, the brand of footy that we want to play as a group.
"We've tinkered with a few things in pre-season that will hopefully help us to play that more exciting, high-scoring football.
"It's pretty exciting what we can produce and I think what we're capable of."
