A member of the Australian Defence Force is in custody after a routine inspection at a Victorian naval base found hazardous materials in a residential unit.

The HMAS Cerberus base has been locked down while the bomb squad searches the unit.

A 400-metre safety zone was declared around a unit at the naval training base on the Mornington Peninsula on Thursday.

A police bomb squad will search the unit.

"A routine inspection this morning of on-base accommodation in HMAS Cerberus has resulted in hazardous material being located in a residential unit," a Defence statement said.

"Victoria Police are in attendance and a Defence member is assisting them with their inquiries."

Police said the search turned up a number of items, but they were unable to say what the hazardous materials found in the unit were.
