Essendon veteran Adam Cooney will wait until the end of the AFL season before deciding if he will seek another contract with the Bombers.

Cooney, 30, has enjoyed an upturn in form recently after an indifferent start to the season.

The Brownlow medallist, who is in the last season of the two-year deal he signed after moving from the Western Bulldogs, said his good form would need to continue for him to extend his 236-game career.

"I'll have to weigh that up at the end of the year," Cooney said on Wednesday.

"Certainly my form has been building but I still want to be playing really good footy towards the end of the year to think about playing on.

"I've got to try and get through this year first ... there's still a long way to go."

Cooney was restricted to 11 games in his first season with the Bombers by hamstring and ankle injuries but has played all six matches to start this campaign.

He enjoyed a good pre-season after undergoing ankle surgery late last year and says the competitive fires still burn despite suspension-ravaged Essendon's onfield struggles.

"Personally, for me, it's about proving that I can still play great footy at this level," he said.

"Proving to Essendon supporters and coaches that, hopefully, I'm a welcomed addition to the club still.

"That motivation is still there and just watching the young guys develop."
