Essendon coach John Worsfold says he'll explore every recruiting option in a bid to return his club to the AFL finals.

Worsfold took heart from the Bombers finishing their season with a strong 22-point away win against Port Adelaide on Friday night.

And he pledged to take an open mind into the trade period to make his playing squad stronger.

"We will explore all avenues of improving our list," Worsfold said.

"You just never know what is out there and what is going to crop up.

"We will go over the next period with a very open mind to improving our list in any way we can."

Worsfold said there wasn't one particular weakness he could identify as a priority to fix.

"There's quite a few areas that we want to get better at and grow in," he said.

"There's not one area that we say is going to be the difference, there's a lot, on and off the field in terms of the way we manage everything and the way we build that trademark that this group want to build.

"It's a fairly new group that we have got together so we just want to build on that."

Worsfold said there was no point dwelling on his side's sluggish start to the season which returned two wins from their initial eight games - including a loss to Carlton.

"If you sit there and start saying 'what ifs', you can just go around in circles," he said.

"We weren't good enough over the course of 22 rounds to deserve a spot in the top eight and we have got to grow to be in that group."

But he was confident the Bombers were on an upward curve.

"We met some expectations, we missed out on others," Worsfold said.

"We showed a lot of growth and as a group we have come a long way - that is the number one thing."
