Forensic teams will resume their examination on Sunday of a man's body found in the water near Sydney's Bondi Beach.

A member of the public found the body just after 8am on Saturday, around 450 metres east of the beach.

Police are now attempting to determine if the body is that of 20-year-old US student Endicott Ackerman, who went missing after jumping from rocks at Bondi Beach on Monday.

Emergency services called off the search for Mr Ackerman on Thursday due to poor sea conditions.
