Boomers upbeat despite Slovenia loss

The Australian men's basketball have lost to Slovenia - their third straight defeat in Europe ahead of their Olympic qualifiers against New Zealand.

They've suffered three straight losses in Europe, but coach Andrej Lemanis insists the Boomers are in good shape for next week's Rio Olympic qualifying series against New Zealand.

The Australian men's basketball team were beaten 79-70 by Slovenia in Ljubljana on Monday night, following back-to-back defeats to Lithuania last week.

Ryan Broekhoff led with 20 points, shooting a perfect 8-8 from inside the arc.

Matthew Dellavedova joined him on double figures, adding 11 points, while Dante Exum had a quiet night with just 1-5 from the field.

Returning NBA centre Andrew Bogut only played eight minutes, with Brock Motum rested.

Lemanis' men, while competitive against their 13th-ranked opponents, struggled from the three-point line, hitting just five from 23 attempts.

But the coach is still happy with the team's build up, 11 days out from the first of two Oceania Olympic qualifying matches against New Zealand.

"We've made progress over the course of our 10 days here in Europe," Lemanis said.

"We've had the ability to work everybody into the group and our broader system is in place.

"Now we just have to refine both offensively and defensively those things that will hold us in good stead when we play in a couple of weeks."

The Boomers have now lost five games on the trot, with their last win being over Mexico in the group stages of the 2014 FIBA World Cup in September.

Australia and Slovenia meet again on Tuesday night to round out their European tour.
