Boost domestic violence funds: committee

A Labor-Greens dominated Senate committee claims Australian governments need to pump millions back into legal services to help tackle domestic violence.

Governments should immediately inject $200 million into legal services to help fight domestic violence, a parliamentary committee says.

In its interim report into domestic violence, the Labor-Greens dominated Senate committee recommends the government reinstate funding cuts from legal services, housing and homelessness services.

While the report acknowledged the government's national plan to reduce domestic violence, inquiry witnesses were frustrated with the speed of its rollout.

One in three Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15 and almost one in five have experienced sexual violence.

Coalition senators say the report fails to acknowledge several government initiatives, including the $100 million second action plan and a national domestic violence order scheme.

The senators reserved their views until the final report, claiming parts of the interim report lacked evidence and clarity.
