Bootleg alcohol kills 14 in Siberia

Fourteen people are dead and 11 more are in hospital after drinking a bootleg liquor in a small village in Siberia.

Fourteen people have died from alcohol poisoning and another 11 have had to be hospitalised after consuming bootleg liquor in a small village in Siberia, health officials say.

The victims, from Krasny Velikan near Russia's border with China, presumably died after drinking ethyl alcohol over the weekend, said Irina Beloshitskaya, a spokeswoman for the regional health ministry, on Sunday.

Eleven were hospitalised in the nearby town of Krasnokamensk and three were in a grave condition.

"They are now receiving hemodialysis," Beloshitskaya said, referring to a treatment for kidney failure.

Governor of the Zabaikalsky region Konstantin Ilkovsky flew into the village along with doctors, investigators and representatives of the emergencies ministry.

"This is a true tragedy for the Zabaikalsky Region," Ilkovsky said in comments released by his office.
