Former Australian captain Allan Border has joined the growing chorus of cricket greats calling for Test matches to be reduced to four days.

Just a day after his successor as Australian leader, Mark Taylor, renewed his calls for the game's longest format to be shortened, Border indicated it might be required for its survival.

"It's under threat - Test cricket," he told SEN Breakfast.

"I think Mark Taylor might be hitting the nail on the head there with four-day games.

"It's a shame because of tradition but sometimes you've got to go with the flow and what people want to see."

Border believes for the proposal to work, the amount of play packed into each day would have to be increased to ensure a result.

"The time to get results is lessened, but you get more overs in the day to try and get those results," he said.

Border's and Taylor's comments come after crowds continue to dwindle around the world for the five-day format.

While Australia has usually remained a stronghold for crowds, each city's opening-day Test crowd was beaten by a single-game Big Bash League attendance last summer.

"That revolution has changed the game totally," Border said.

"I think we do need to have a look at Test cricket. Maybe a Test championship, day-night cricket, four-day cricket - all these things are on the agenda."

Former Australian greats Greg Chappell and Shane Warne have also previously voiced their support for Tests to be reduced to four days.
