Adelaide's historic botanic garden has proved an unlikely crop source for a new boutique beer from Australia's biggest brewer.

Barley grown at the 157-year-old garden forms a key ingredient in Coopers' new limited-release Botanic Ale, brewed in partnership with the Adelaide Hills-based Lobethal Bierhaus microbrewery.

It marks the first time Coopers has collaborated with another brewery in developing a new beer.

Only 1200 litres of the ale will be brewed and all proceeds from its sales will go to the Botanic Gardens of South Australia (BGSA).

The beer will be sold through the Lobethal Bierhaus and the Adelaide Botanic Garden's restaurant and is expected to be available in bottle and keg from October.

BGSA director Stephen Forbes said the project allowed visitors to watch the barley crop grow in the heart of the city, providing an opportunity to show how plants are used in daily life.
