Botox health warning after illegal import

Some Perth botox patients are being urged to get tested after revelations of an unregistered nurse injecting people with illegally imported medicine.

An unregistered nurse injected botox clients at a Perth beauty clinic with medicine that was illegally imported, the state health department says.

The department has now advised patients who visited Pastel Skin and Body Care in Applecross to contact a public health nurse for a check-up.

It follows an investigation - triggered by a customer complaint - that found the person giving the injections was not a registered nurse and that the medicine had been illegally imported.

Botox is a prescription-only medicine that must be administered by a doctor or nurse.

West Australian deputy chief health officer Andrew Robertson said the botox injections were provided to customers who had purchased anti-wrinkle treatment via internet shopping sites, such as cudo.com.au and deals.com.au.

"Where possible, WA Health is contacting all of the clinic's clients who have been given injections, but information on some clients is limited," he said.

Patients who have undergone anti-wrinkle treatment within the past year - and have not received a letter or email from the Health Department - should contact the WA public health nurse on 9431 0200.

Dr Robertson said anyone having botox injections should ensure they were being administered by a trained health practitioner.

Medicine injections from an unlicensed clinic put people at greater risk from the medicine and cross-infection, he said.
