Boullier named new McLaren race director

McLaren, who have named Eric Boullier as new race director, are in Jerez this week, along with other teams, to test drive new cars for the 2014 season.

Eric Boullier has been appointed as the new race director at Formula One team McLaren.

The 40-year-old Frenchman takes up the position from February 3, the team said in a statement.

"First of all, I regard this appointment as an honour, a privilege and a wonderful opportunity," he said on the team website on Wednesday.

"I'm both eager and determined to play an active part, working alongside McLaren Racing's other senior managers and directors, within a new operational structure, to bring about the changes that will deliver success," he added.

McLaren are making changes in response to a poor season in 2013 when the team failed to claim a single podium position for the first time since 1980.

Ron Dennis was appointed chairman and chief executive of the McLaren Group in January, and continues to build his background team.

"In due course we'll announce the identity of McLaren Racing's new chief executive officer, who'll report to me, and to whom Eric will report," said Dennis.

Boullier had previously been team principle of Lotus F1 since 2010 before leaving the position earlier this month. In 2013 he led the team to fourth place in the constructors' championship.

McLaren and other teams are in Jerez, Spain, this week to test drive new cars for the 2014 season.

The season starts with the Melbourne Grand Prix on March 16.
