Steven Bowditch may well be the forgotten man of Australian golf this week but the Queenslander is looking forward to the chance to get his own headlines at the Tour Championship.

Bowditch sits in the shadows of new world No.1 Jason Day as the only other Australian to make the US PGA Tour's season-ending event at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta but the 32-year-old is ready to make some headlines of his own.

A winner at the Byron Nelson Championship earlier this year, Bowditch comes into the Tour Championship ranked 24th in the FedEx Cup and a long shot at claiming the $US10 million ($A14.29 million) bonus.

He must first win the Tour Championship and then have Day finish 17th or worse, Jordan Spieth finish outside the top five, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson outside the top three and Bubba Watson and Zach Johnson finish outside the top two for his miracle to come true.

"I am just excited to be here. It was a goal all year to get here and not very often you get a reasonable chance at $10 million," Bowditch said.

"I obviously need a few things to happen for it to go my way but the odds of getting a big slice of the pie are better than the lottery.

"I am in a good spot. Guys have actually done it from further back so I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Indeed Bill Haas came from 25th spot back in 2011 when Webb Simpson crashed from the No.1 spot.

But Bowditch knows it is unlikely Day will play poorly, so he will just go out with controlled aggression and try to win and let the rest fall where it may.

"I might just have to let him know I need the $10 million more than he does," Bowditch joked about Day.

"Jason is playing unbelievable golf, he's the best in the world, he's on another level compared to every golfer out here and I am sure he will keep it up and keep it going.

"I can go out there and freewheel it, I have nothing to lose and potentially $10 million to gain.

"The course sets up good for my eye. A lot of tee shots are left to right. I have grown up on Bermuda greens. You need to use all facets of your game and I'm looking forward to it."
