Bowie plaque spurs Berlin police search

A porcelain plaque commemorating David Bowie's former home in Berlin has gone missing.

Police are investigating the disappearance of a plaque commemorating the three years David Bowie spent in Berlin in the 1970s.

The white porcelain marker was only erected in August on the building in the city's Schoeneberg district where Bowie lived from 1976 to 1978, during which he recorded some of his most influential albums, Low and Heroes.

The 3400 euro ($A5062) plaque is made of a bone china and quotes the chorus of Heroes, which was inspired by a couple he spied kissing in front of the looming Berlin Wall.

Bowie died in January, aged 69.
