Grant Bowler says starring in the video game Defiance "freaked me out".
The 45-year-old actor, who voices the character Joshua Nolan in Trion Worlds' online shooter game, plays the same character in the US television series, also called Defiance.
The video game and TV show both launched last April and co-exist concurrently.
"As the events of Defiance unfold weekly on your TV screen, you can see how the residents struggles impact the game of Defiance," Syfy, the channel that screens the TV show, said on its website.
In Australia to launch the second season of Defiance, Bowler said working on a video game was a completely different experience for him.
"I did do the motion capture and all the voicing for my character - it was really, really different," he told AAP.
"I've got so used to seeing myself on a television screen or a movie screen ... the weird thing was seeing myself animated in 3D - it was like seeing myself on camera all over again. It really freaked me out.
"The guys in Trion had me down so well ... It actually felt a bit invasive because they picked up some of my mannerisms so well - it was like, 'You're not meant to know that'."
Bowler, an avid video gamer, says he plays the Defiance game - available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC - in secret.
"I'm a real sucker for (video games)," he said.
"I'm always playing something."
