The world's best pound-for-pound boxer Floyd Mayweather could use his first Australian visit next week, to let the world know if he will finally agree to a long awaited and much anticipated fight with fellow superstar Manny Pacquiao,

Mayweather, who presently holds welterweight and super welterweight world titles, will make dinner and nightclub appearances in Sydney and Melbourne on January 29 and January 30 respectively.

The 37-year-old American is unquestioningly the dominant boxer of the modern era, having won a stack of world titles across five weight divisions from super featherweight to super welterweight,

He has accumulated a record of 47-0 with 26 KOs since making his professional debut in 1996.

Along the way he has beaten a host of other top title-winning fighters and champions including Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Zab Judah, Arturo Gatti and Diego Corrales.

A fight with Filipino boxing icon Pacquiao has been mooted for several years, but recent reports suggest it is now closer than ever to finally happening.

While any formal announcement of a fight would probably be made in the United States, Mayweather is bound to be asked for comment about it at his only media conference in Australia in Melbourne, which is expected to be his first official media engagement of the year.

One person Mayweather looks certain to meet during his Australian visit is potential opponent, Anthony Mundine.

The 39-year-old Australian is the WBC Silver super welterweight champion and has made no secret of his desire to fight full WBC champion Mayweather.

Mayweather's Australian tour promoter Max Markson told AAP he would extend an invitation to Mundine to attend the American fighter's functions in both cities.
