Boy, 6, dies in WA rally car accident

A six-year-old boy has died and two other children, aged eight and 10, have been seriously injured after a rally car crash at an event in WA.

A six-year-old boy died and two other children were seriously injured when a car ploughed into a crowd of spectators at a rally in Western Australia.

The crash happened on Saturday afternoon at an event in Donnelly River, in the state's South West region, when a man in his 40's lost control of his car on a bend and slid through temporary barriers into the crowd.

The six-year-old boy died at the scene while an eight-year-old girl remains in a critical condition and a 10-year-old boy is in a serious but stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children.

The Trade Hire Donnelly Rally, a round of the WA Rally Championship, was held in forest between Manjimup and Nannup in WA's southwest, according to the Rally WA website.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport said in a statement that it was saddened to learn of the tragedy.

Chief executive Eugene Arocca said the thoughts of CAMS and the Australian motor sport community were with the families and friends of those involved.

"This is a sad and tragic incident and we extend our deepest sympathies to all involved," he said.
