Singer Boy George and his former band Culture Club have reunited, but he says the days of Do You Really Want to Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon are in the past.

"For me nostalgia is kind of purgatory," The 52-year-old told Seven's Sunrise program on Tuesday.

"People are obsessed with the '80s, but we are going to do some new music.

"We are not interested in nostalgia - too much of it is really bad for you."

The singer and DJ is touring Australia to promote This Is What I Do, his first studio album in 18 years.

The music is not necessarily in line with today's tastes but the styles he listened to while growing up, George says.

"I went back to all the things I fell in love with as a kid, instead of trying to be hip.

"That's a bit like your nan trying to wear a boob tube, trying to be all trendy."

Culture Club's reunion will showcase new songwriting by all four of its members.

"Now that we've grown up a bit, we get on very well," he said.

"We've been writing recently and it was a really enjoyable experience, which was a big, big change for all of us."
