A four-year-old boy has been rescued after he was left dangling by his head from his fifth-story balcony in Taiwan.

The young boy had been left unsupervised at home over the weekend in Pingtung City when he wandered over to the balcony.

A security grill enclosing the balcony prevented the boy from plummeting to his death after he got wedged between the steel grates.

Video footage recorded by one of the neighbours shows the boy using his arms to hold himself up after his head got stuck between the steel bars.

Firefighters abseiled down to the fifth floor to free the boy, with a ladder truck also deployed to complete the rescue.

Neighbours were seen holding a crash pad for the boy to fall onto if he managed to slip through the security bars.

Minor injuries were sustained to the head and ears, but the boy was otherwise physically unharmed.

Hong-Kong newspaper Apple Daily reports the parents have been fined for leaving the child home alone.

The violation under Article 51 of the Children and Juvenile Welfare and Protection Act results in a fine between A$130 and A$1300 (NT$3,000 and NT$30,000).
