Veteran Western Bulldogs defender Matthew Boyd turns 35 this season but he is not approaching his 15th AFL campaign like it's his last.
Boyd's playing future was the subject of much speculation last season after a contract offer was withdrawn during a patch of lean form mid-year.
Even after he earned a third All-Australian nod and played a key role in the Dogs ' barnstorming run to the premiership he remained unsigned.
The former club captain was eventually offered a new deal in October.
Given how his contract situation played out last year, Boyd isn't about to make any bold statements after three rounds but he admits his longevity hasn't been far from his mind for a while.
"I've been having thoughts about (playing) next year since I was about 29," Boyd said with a broad smile.
"It's very early in the year ... I'll just continue to try to play the best footy I possibly can, recover well and contribute to the team in the best way I possibly can.
"I think the most important thing for footballers or sports people of any age is to continue to enjoy what you do and I certainly am doing that.
"I don't need to think too far ahead."
Boyd has averaged 22 possessions a game after three rounds and has kicked two goals.
The 285-game veteran is tantalisingly close to the magical 300 club but he says the rare milestone isn't on his bucket list.
"It's not really on my list at the moment ... 15 games is a lot of water to pass under the bridge before I get to that point," he said.
"But I was lucky enough to tip over the 300 total games last year (including international and pre-season matches) and get AFL life membership so I get my two tickets to the grand final every year now.
"I'm happy about that."
