Boyd looks to impress at Qld Classic

Pole vaulter Alana Boyd will be out to seal a world title qualifying height at the Queensland Track Classic in Brisbane.

It won't all be about Sally Pearson at Saturday's Queensland Track Classic - or so pole vaulter Alana Boyd hopes.

All the pre-meet hype has been dominated by Olympic champion Pearson after revealing she will launch her campaign to reclaim the 100m hurdles world title in Brisbane.

However, dual Commonwealth champion Boyd hopes to also turn heads by clinching a 2015 Beijing world titles qualifier this weekend.

The national record holder has the 4.50m mark in her sights after coming within striking distance of the clearance many times on the Australian Athletics Tour, including a 4.45m effort at Adelaide a fortnight ago.

"The qualifying mark is what I'm chasing most, but to win the gold as well would be ideal," Boyd said.

"It has been great to start my preparation for 2015 not returning from injury.

"I am miles ahead of where I have been in the past in terms of my strength and speed, as well as technical aspects of my jump that have been a work in progress for years.

"I feel that if I can stay healthy then anything is possible this year."

Boyd is still buzzing from her effort in Glasgow, where she defended her Commonwealth Games title last year.

Battling heavy rain and winds, the 30-year-old soared over 4.50m to seal gold.

Not that Boyd will have it all her own way in Brisbane.

The field includes London Olympian Liz Parnov, Commonwealth Games starter Vicky Parnov and Nina Kennedy, who soared to an outstanding 4.59m world junior outdoor best clearance at the Jandakot City Track Classic in Perth last month.

Still, Pearson will headline after being locked in to contest her pet event for the first time since September's IAAF Diamond League final at the Brisbane showcase.

Meanwhile, former world champion Dani Samuels (women's discus), national champions Robbie Crowther (men's long jump), Julian Wruck (men's discus) and Damien Birkinhead (shot put) plus Nik Bojic (men's high jump), Hannah Joye (women's high jump) and Matthew Outzen (men's javelin) will look to impress before the national titles to be held in Brisbane from March 26-29.
