Boys warned over suspicious Vic blaze

One of the suspicious fires lit during Victoria's recent bushfires is believed to have been lit by two school boys, police say.

Two school boys have been questioned over one of nearly a dozen suspicious blazes lit during Victoria's fire emergency.

Police say the grass fire started on Sunday in Long Gully, a suburb of Bendigo, and threatened homes.

The boys, aged 11 and nine, have since been interviewed about the fire.

The 11-year-old boy received an official caution while the nine-year-old was warned about his behaviour.

The youngest boy is too young to be charged with a criminal offence.

Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay says a total of 10 fires lit on Sunday are believed to be suspicious, but most are likely due to carelessness and not malicious intent.

"The really evil, evil people who go there and light fires with the intention of killing people and destroying property are probably not as many as the careless stuff, the foolish stuff or the troubled kids," he told Fairfax Radio on Tuesday.

The deliberately fires were lit across the state, from in the Latrobe Valley to along the Great Ocean Road and in two spots in the Merri Creek in Melbourne's northern suburbs.
