Bracks backs new Labor reform push

A new group seeking reform of the Labor party has been backed by former Victorian premier Steve Bracks and other prominent figures.

Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks has endorsed a new movement dedicated to reform of the Australian Labor Party.

Melbourne-based Open Labor is the latest of a series of groups promoting an overhaul of party rules and strategy.

Mr Bracks, who in 2010 co-wrote a review of the ALP, says on the group's website the party is the "great actor in modern Australian politics".

"But it is clear that the Australian Labor Party needs to renew and strengthen itself in order to serve the community well in the decades ahead," Mr Bracks says.

He says the party needs a large and active body of members and supporters "playing roles that are valued".

"The ALP does need to be more open and democratic. It needs stronger connections to the wider community. It needs to engage the energy and commitment of many Australians."

The group, which has the theme "Let's get this party started", will be launched at the City of Melbourne Bowls Club on December 1.

Other endorsements have been given by former deputy prime minister Brian Howe and journalist Maxine McKew, who defeated John Howard in the seat of Bennelong in 2007.

Open Labor said in its first public statement it was a group of people "who seek renewal of the ALP and a more open, optimistic and decent politics in Australia".

It says Labor in recent years has "struggled to find the ideas and ideals needed to inspire Australians".
