US actor Bradley Cooper will be gaining 16 kilograms for his latest film role.

The Oscar nominee will portray late Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, who was murdered in Texas earlier this month, in the upcoming biopic.

"I have to be someone in the same vein as him. He was a very big guy," Cooper told The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Cooper has been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Richie DiMaso in American Hustle.

The Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 2.
