Attorney-General George Brandis has been accused of wasting taxpayer funds amid claims he will appeal to the Full Federal Court to keep his ministerial diary secret.

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus says Senator Brandis will appeal to the higher court after the Administrative Appeals Tribunal ruled in December there was "no practical" reason for him to refuse a freedom of information request for the diary.

"It is extraordinary that Senator Brandis would go to such great lengths to avoid dealing with such a simple FOI request," Mr Dreyfus said on Wednesday.
