Brandis doing 'fantastic job': Frydenberg

Cabinet minister Josh Frydenberg has come to the defence of George Brandis as he faces questions about his working relationship with the solicitor-general.

George Brandis is doing a fantastic job as attorney-general and isn't going anywhere, his cabinet colleague Josh Frydenberg says.

Senator Brandis is facing questions after reportedly approaching former commonwealth solicitor-general David Bennett after rejecting advice given to him on the same-sex marriage plebiscite by current Solicitor-General Justin Gleeson.

"He continues to talk to the current solicitor-general and as well as seeking advice elsewhere. There's nothing inappropriate about that," Mr Frydenberg told the Nine Network on Friday.

Mr Frydenberg insisted Senator Brandis had not misled parliament.

When asked to rate how must trouble the senator was on a scale of one-to-10, he said: "One. He's in no trouble at all."

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese said either Senator Brandis or Mr Gleeson had to go.

"The position is untenable," he said.

"This is a farcical situation from the first law officer of the land who clearly can't get on with the second law officer of the land."
