Attorney-General George Brandis says he will be surprised if the Federal Court were to dismiss unions royal commissioner Dyson Heydon.

Unions are looking at their legal options and could make an application to the court to challenge Mr Heydon's ruling.

But Senator Brandis told ABC radio on Monday he would be surprised if any court considering the same facts and applying the same legal principles Mr Heydon did in his "fine exposition" were to arrive at a different conclusion.
