Attorney-General George Brandis will provide advice to the prime minister on allegations Pauline Hanson's One Nation sought to defraud money from Queensland electoral authorities using inflated receipts.
While Senator Hanson's chief of staff James Ashby has denied any wrongdoing, the prime minister told parliament on Monday he would be getting advice from the Australian Federal Police commissioner, justice minister and attorney-general.
Senator Brandis told a Senate committee on Wednesday his staff had held discussions with the prime minister's staff.
"What I'm expecting is a formal request to me, which I've yet to receive," Senator Brandis said.
Asked by Labor senator Murray Watt whether he had spoken with Mr Ashby, the attorney said he frequently spoke with Senator Hanson's adviser in relation to a range of issues.
Senator Brandis told the committee he and Mr Ashby "may have had a glass of wine" in the attorney's Brisbane office before Christmas last year.
He had also discussed the High Court case involving former One Nation senator Rod Culleton with Mr Ashby.
