Brazil surf star banned for storming tower

Brazilian surfer Filipe Toledo will miss the World Surf League event in Fiji after copping a suspension for attempting to storm the judges' tower.

Brazilian star Filipe Toledo has been suspended for the next World Surf League event after attempting to storm the judges' tower at the Rio Pro when eliminated early from his home event.

World No.6 Toledo was incensed by an interference ruling against him in his third round heat and he later apologised for his actions when he tried to remonstrate with the judges.

"I'm a passionate guy and surfing is my life," said 22-year-old Toledo in a WSL statement.

"I was very upset and my actions after the heat were unacceptable.

"After cooling down, I realised that I was not myself. I'm very sorry for my behaviour. "

Toledo will be forced to sit out the next WSL round in Fiji.

WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel said the organisation had no choice but to take action against Toledo, who he described as "as a really good kid and an incredible surfer".

"It's disappointing when we have to pass disciplinary action for any of our surfers, but that behaviour is not acceptable for the sport," he said.

"Filipe knows this and we look forward to seeing his talent back on Tour very soon."
