Breakers cling to NBL play-off hopes

Tom Abercrombie says the NZ Breakers, who have dropped outside the ANBL top four with six successive losses, still have everything to play for.

Swingman Tom Abercrombie is backing the New Zealand Breakers' chances of retaining their NBL title - if they can make the play-offs.

The Auckland club's hopes of getting into the top-four post-season are in the balance after a six-match losing run that has dropped them to fifth.

They are two wins behind fourth-placed Adelaide, who have strung together six consecutive victories, have a game in hand and are leading the Breakers in their head-to-head season matches over the season.

Abercrombie says there's still everything to play for in the Breakers' five remaining matches.

"It isn't over yet," he said.

But the Breakers would need a winning streak from here on in to keep themselves in the play-off picture.

"We know if we can get there, those teams will be scared of us because we've been there and done it before," he said.

"We have to get there first, but certainly that flicker of hope keeps us going."

The Breakers are at home on Friday night against sixth-placed Townsville, who won 89-66 when the sides met last Thursday.

Abercrombie couldn't get on the scoresheet that night - "I had probably my worst game" - but bounced back with 23 points in the loss in Cairns two days later.

That took the 28-year-old, now in his eighth season with the club, to within one point of Kirk Penney's all-time Breakers scoring record of 2517.

"I've been here for a while, so it will be a nice thing to achieve," he said.

For Abercrombie, the points he remembers most came right at the beginning of his career, when he made his debut as a development player.

"I got subbed on right at the end and hit a three at the left-hand corner," he said.

"That always sticks out for me as my first bucket in the NBL and then I got an alley-oop in the next one, so that was a nice way to start."
