Breakers owners look at selling club

The owners of the NZ Breakers, winners of four of the past six NBL titles, are looking at selling the club.

The long-time owners of the New Zealand Breakers, one of the country's most successful sporting franchises, say they are keen to sell the NBL club.

Aucklanders Paul and Liz Blackwell have been sole owners of the Breakers for the past 11 years, a span which has seen them collect four of the last six NBL championships.

The couple are interested in selling 100 per cent of the club or bringing in equity partners.

"It comes down to who's interested and what the best result will be for the Blackwells and the club," said broker Michael Pleciak, who is representing the owners.

"They are open to different options. If that's another group coming in, other partners or a complete sale, they will consider all of those."

Pleciak said the process was a targeted approach towards certain parties in New Zealand, Australia and Asia.

He said it was too early to say what the level of interest would be, but basketball had a big following and the Breakers were a proven success on and off the court.

"That's testimony to the Blackwells and how they've owned it and run it."

The announcement comes follows changes in both the coaching staff and management at the franchise, with two former Breakers taking charge.

Paul Henare will replace Dean Vickerman as coach, while Dillon Boucher is the new general manager, taking over from chief executive Richard Clarke.
