The Breakers have just one spot left on their roster after news that Australian guard Shane McDonald will join the club as it targets a fifth NBL championship in six years.
The 1.93m 30-year-old has spent the past 10 years combining his basketball skills with studies and a fulltime teaching career, but has turned his back on that to take up an offer from the Auckland-based club that he says he would not have entertained from any other club.
"I have followed the NBL and really admired from afar what the Breakers have been doing," he said.
"In fact I probably wouldn't have gone to any other team on a similar deal."
Breakers coach Dean Vickerman believes he has a player with the experience, temperament and game to do a great job.
"The qualities I was looking for in this role are a feisty defender, the ability to attack pressure and make great decisions, play at a high tempo and to be a constant three-point threat."
The experience to lead the team when Cedric Jackson is off court was also vital, he added.
McDonald has enjoyed a long career with the Nunawading Spectres in the South East Australian Basketball League, being named 2013 MVP and currently enjoying a season averaging 18 points, four rebounds and a competition leading 8.6 assists per game.
He has NBL experience with the Perth Wildcats and Singapore Slingers, as well as a brief two-game stint with the Melbourne Tigers.
