Canterbury NRL star Brett Morris has reportedly suffered another injury setback on his troublesome knee and faces further surgery.
The Seven Network is reporting the NSW State of Origin back will go under the knife on Monday, just four days out from the Bulldogs' season opener against Manly, and is set to miss at least the first month of the new campaign.
Earlier this month, it was reported the Bulldogs No.1 was struggling after undergoing a routine cleanout, with his injury turning out to be more serious than initially thought.
Morris is likely to spend significant time on the sidelines as he recovers from yet another operation.
His setback will open the door for big-name recruit Will Hopoate to wear the No.1 jersey against the Sea Eagles on Friday night at Brookvale Oval.
Hopoate has overcome his own injury concerns to be fit for the start of the season, cleared of a major leg injury after limping off in the side's trial a fortnight ago against Penrith.
Morris managed just 16 games in his return season with the Bulldogs because of knee and hamstring problems and admitted he was at times playing "on one leg" towards the back end of the year.
