Brisbane locals urged to start sandbagging

As Cyclone Marcia tracks closer to the Queensland coastline, residents in Brisbane are also being warned to prepare for severe weather.

Brisbane residents have been urged to start sandbagging as the effects of Cyclone Marcia are felt.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said residents in low-lying suburbs should be taking precautions, with the cyclone expected to generate a large storm surge on top of the normal high tide level and torrential rain.

"We have had about 90,000 sandbags collected from our five depots and more are available," he told the Nine Network.

Council depots are producing sandbags at a rate of about 4000 an hour, he said.

"Particularly people in tidal areas, low-lying areas, they are the ones who need to get ready," Mr Quirk said.

Brisbane is expecting to see winds of about 90km/h later on Friday.

Residents have been urged to also clear their yards of objects that could become projectiles.

Mr Quirk said the primary flooding risk in Brisbane was creek flooding, and overflow from dams was not a pressing concern.

He urged people to avoid being on the roads, and for parents to keep children away from floodwater.

"No boogie boarding. (It's) so easy to get sucked into a drain and off to the creek system," he said.
