Briscoe to 'replace Hinchcliffe at Indy'

Australia's Ryan Briscoe will reportedly replace James Hinchcliffe at this weekend's Indy 500 after the IndyCar driver was injured in a high-speed crash.

Australian Ryan Briscoe is set replace injured IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe in this weekend's Indianapolis 500.

Hinchcliffe is recovering in hospital after having surgery on his upper left thigh following a high-speed crash during practice for the showpiece.

The 28-year-old Canadian hit a barrier on turn three at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after apparently experiencing problems with his car.

According to local broadcaster WISH-TV, Briscoe will take his seat at Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports in Sunday's race.

The 33-year-old has made nine Indy 500 starts during his career - three with Chip Ganassi Racing and five with Team Penske.

He won pole position in 2012 and finished the race fifth.

Briscoe, however, is yet to drive in the IndyCar series this season.

If the New South Welshman does contest in the 99th edition of the race, he will join countryman Will Power who will start from second on the grid.

Hinchcliffe's accident was the fifth major one at the famed 4km oval in the past week.

Helio Castroneves, Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter were involved in spectacular crashes in which their cars went airborne, while Pippa Mann spun out while exiting turn four and made hard contact with the inside wall.

None of the drivers were seriously injured.
