Toe Wrestling is a bit like arm wrestling but with feet. There are two people in each bout and each is the best of three. The contestants start by locking right toes, then left, then right again.
It all began in the northern English village of Fenny Bentley back in 1976 when a group of walkers at the Ye Olde Royal Oak Inn set about searching for a game that only the British could win.
"I just love the fact that this is the one sport that England always win at," said Alan Nash, the current British World Toe Wrestling Champion. "We get hammered at everything else, we get the odd win now and again. This time you're guaranteed it's going to be an England win."
There is a men's and a women's championship as mixed matches are not allowed
Toe inspections take place prior to the initial heats. Contestants must have their toes thoroughly examined and passed by a qualified nurse before being given clearance to compete, although for some competitors a visit to the chiropodist would certainly be in order post championship.
"There have been some dirty toed tactics," explained organiser Edward Allington. "'Flicking off' is one of them, when you break contact with the toe when you know you're gonna lose. If you pull your toe away then it's difficult for the referee to decide if it's accidental or deliberate."
Like other well-know sporting occasions, the inclement weather meant that Championships was played inside the pub.
In the men's final, Alan Nash beat off stiff competition from Michael "Grimbo" Grimmett to claim his 12th World title. They last met in a final over a decade over, with Nasty Nash also winning on that occasion.
A lady who wished to be known only as Tracy Tippy Toe took the women's title.
