Brazil is baffling for Britons despite the huge South American country's high profile as host of the about-to-start football World Cup.
More than 30 per cent of Britons could not pick out Brazil on a map, while 54 per cent were unaware than Brazilians speak Portuguese, according to a survey by Hotels.com.
Of the 2,000 people polled, 1 per cent mistook Brazil for China on a map, while the country Brazil was most mistaken for was Argentina.
Geographically-challenged Britons also thought that Brazil was Peru or Uruguay.
On language, as many as 28 per cent reckoned Brazilians spoke Spanish, while 15 per cent assumed that in Brazil the locals, obviously, spoke... Brazilian.
In addition, 2 per cent thought they spoke Mexican and 1 per cent plumped for them speaking English.
Kate Hopcraft, of Hotels.com, said: "It's interesting to see so many Brits unable to pinpoint Brazil, which has to be the most talked-about country of the moment.
"There's so much more to Brazil than the 'beautiful game'. It's baffling to find so many are unaware of its location."
