Bronze for Aussie men in 4x800m relay

Australia have claimed the bronze medal in the men's 4x800m at the World Relays meet in the Bahamas.

Australia have claimed the bronze medal in the men's 4x800m relay at the World Relays meet in the Bahamas after Kenya were disqualified for an illegal changeover.

The Australian team of Jared West, Josh Ralph, Ryan Gregson and Jordan Williamsz were fourth across the line in seven minutes 16.30 seconds before being promoted to a podium position.

The United States claimed gold ahead of Poland.

"I think it was the changeover in my leg that brought Kenya undone, the runner was trying to get the baton before everyone else, but that's the thing with relays, you have to know how to run them to do well in them," said Gregson, the national 1500m record holder.

"I ran a decent leg. I was in no man's land at the outset trying to close the gap to Lewandowski (of Poland), who is a great runner, so I was up against it and I think I ran pretty well."

The Australian women's 4x400m team effectively secured qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics by winning their heat in 3:30.73 and advancing the final.

Caitlin Sargent, Jess Gulli and Anneliese Rubie set the win up for Australia, with anchor runner Morgan Mitchell holding off a challenge on the home straight.

"A quicker time tomorrow is the aim now," said Mitchell.

"That will give us more confidence heading into the world championships later this year."
