Bronze for Aussies at world rowing champs

Australia have struggled on the penultimate day of the world rowing championships, with only the men's coxless four able to claim a bronze medal.

Australia have bagged another medal at the world rowing championships in Amsterdam, with the men's coxless four walking away with bronze.

Great Britain claimed gold after enjoying a brilliant start in variable weather conditions, while Australia had to work their way back from fourth to sneak onto the podium.

The crew of Fergus Pragnell, Joshua Dunkley-Smith, Spencer Turrin and Alexander Lloyd missed out on taking the silver off the Americans by just 0.57 seconds, who themselves were nearly three seconds behind Great Britain.

"To be honest, today was a little bit of a relief," Dunkley-Smith said.

"We didn't quite have the race we wanted to, we came out quite well for the first hundred and unfortunately under conditions like this you're moving quite quickly and really sweetly and in a very quick instant it can turn quite bad.

"We clipped a bit of water and caught a bit of a crab and lost a fair bit of momentum through there but managed to get back on it and keep trying to work through.

"We thought we might have been able to get second there but we're happy with the third regardless."

Australia missed out on medals in the other three finals of the day, with the women's quad scull (fourth), lightweight double scull (fifth) and coxless pair (fifth) all falling just short.

Sunday is the concluding day of the championships, with a total of four Australian crews competing for medals.
