Brumbies need more discipline: Sam Carter

Co-captain Sam Carter says the Brumbies need to be more disciplined if they are to make Friday night's game against the Force their first win for the year.

Brumbies co-captain Sam Carter has urged his team to show more discipline as they aim to shake off the scars of another narrow Super Rugby defeat.

While a try after the siren sunk the Brumbies on Saturday night, the foundation for the Sharks' 27-22 victory had been laid by Pat Lambie's five penalty goals from seven attempts.

Carter refused to blame the refereeing for the Brumbies' penalty count, instead saying the problem was their own to work on.

"The ref's decision is final," Carter said.

"We just need to be more disciplined in our own half because if we're going to give a South African team with a kicker like Lambie that many opportunities at goal, it's going to hurt us every time.

"We can't be doing that, we need to fix our discipline."

The heartbreaking defeat in their first home match of the season came on the back of a gallant 17-13 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch, in round one.

A lack of killer instinct has undermined the new-look Brumbies' impressive effort.

"We're about winning and we don't really like losing," Carter said.

"There were a few positive things there but again two weeks in a row we let ourselves down in the final moments."

The Brumbies rallied with a Tevita Kuridrani try to answer the Sharks 19-point turnaround.

They almost snatched the victory late but a drop goal attempt sailed wide and then lineout errors dashed their hopes of scoring from a rolling maul.

"Towards the end there we just couldn't capitalise on the opportunities we had in the last 10 minutes and that's something we really need to work on going forward," Carter said.

The Brumbies will get their next opportunity to open their winning account when they face the Force at GIO Stadium on Friday night.

"We're just going to have to pick ourselves up and keep going, that's what we pride ourselves on down here," Carter said.

"We've had a lot of success in the past coming back from tough losses so I have no doubt this week is going to be any different."
