Brumbies peaking for Super title challenge

Incoming Brumbies coach Dan McKellar believes a host of stars returning from injuries can be the Brumbies' point of difference in the Super Rugby finals.

The Brumbies are in the best physical shape to win a Super Rugby title for years, according to assistant coach Dan McKellar.

Cancer survivor Christian Lealiifano's remarkable return to rugby in an exhibition match in Singapore last week has put the world-class outside back in the mix for the Brumbies' finals campaign.

Tomas Cubelli, Argentina's starting halfback before he injured his knee in a pre-season trial, returned in the same match and is set to push newly capped Wallaby Joe Powell for the No. 9 jersey.

Prop Scott Sio overcame a knee injury to play an hour across two Tests for the Wallabies earlier in the month, while newly re-signed veteran front rower Ben Alexander has also returned to fitness.

"I think over the last few years there's been times throughout the season where we've had injury issues where we've been a little bit fatigued and tired going into the finals," McKellar said.

"I think this year that can be a point of difference for us. We get not only experience, but we get that energy and enthusiasm back."

McKellar, who will take over from head coach Stephen Larkham next season, said peaking at the right time was critical.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika and former Brumbies captain Stephen Moore have criticised the fitness programs of Super Rugby franchises, saying players aren't prepared for the rigours of Test rugby.

But McKellar defended the club's program and said the players would do the same.

"I can't speak for what happens at other franchises, I can only speak for what happens here but how we prepare players we feel is equal to any," he said.
