Brumbies back-rower Ita Vaea has been forced to retire from rugby union due to ongoing heart issues.
The promising 27-year-old, who last week took part in a Wallabies camp for the England Test series, was forced to leave the field midway through the ACT club's Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs on April 2 and has followed doctor's advice in the decision.
"I am extremely disappointed to be retiring today, under these circumstances," Vaea said.
"It will be hard watching the boys run out, but I know that this is the best decision for myself and my family."
Vaea has been battling the issues since 2012, when he was forced to give up rugby to receive medical treatment for life-threatening blood clots in 2012.
He subsequently missed the 2013 and 2014 seasons, before making a return in 2015.
"Coming back from this last time was something I never thought I could achieve," he said.
"I am so blessed that I was given a second opportunity. Now I have to concentrate on the next chapter in my life."
Vaea played 48 matches for the Brumbies since his debut in 2011, scoring six tries.
