Bryan Green named Tasmanian ALP leader

Tasmanian Labor has elected former deputy premier Bryan Green as its new leader.

Mr Green won a caucus vote unanimously on Monday after former premier Lara Giddings stepped down as leader.

Former health minister Michelle O'Byrne will be Mr Green's deputy.

"There is no doubt that Labor has suffered a bad election result but I am committed to rebuilding this proud party with the help of a strong, unified and committed team," Mr Green said in a statement.

The unanimous decision means a ballot for the leadership that was to include rank and file ALP members will no longer go ahead.
