Buchanan quits NZ Cricket role

Former Australian coach John Buchanan is giving up his role as New Zealand's director of cricket to return home for family reasons.

Former Australian coach John Buchanan has quit as New Zealand director of cricket.

Appointed in May 2011, he will leave the role immediately and return to Australia.

A statement from New Zealand Cricket says Buchanan is disappointed to be leaving at this time as he has enjoyed his work.

"However, due to family circumstances, he has decided to return to Australia".

Buchanan was appointed to the role by former NZ Cricket boss Justin Vaughan but was understood to have had a difficult relationship with current boss David White.

NZ Cricket said it respected Buchanan's decision to return home and wished him well.

His departure follows the announcement earlier this week that selection boss, Australian Kim Littlejohn, will leave when his two-year contract expires in September.

Former national coach John Wright cited problems with Buchanan's style as a factor in his decision not to reapply for his job last year.

Buchanan was the architect of the new high performance program, and was given the tasks of establishing a uniform coaching philosophy across the country and implementing a talent identification program.
